Videos to Beat the Odds Multimedia Competition |
Problem gambling affects over 2 million Americans – young and old – every year. Teens, however, are at significant
risk as they are two to four times more likely to develop a gambling problem than adults. To address this issue, the
Minnesota Department of Human Services’ Problem Gambling Program created the Videos to Beat the Odds
multimedia competition.

Open to high school students statewide, the goal of the competition was to educate students about problem gambling, as well as its symptoms and consequences. Participants were asked to submit creative work that answered this question: “If you only had 30-90 seconds to tell someone about problem gambling, what would you say or do?”

The judging panel included representatives from KSTP 5 Eyewitness News, Minnesota Department of Human Services, Minnesota State Lottery, Therapy Today and Tomorrow, and Russell Herder Advertising. First, second and third place, as well as honorable mention, winners were selected based on three categories: relevance to competition theme, creativity and overall presentation/technical quality. Although students were not asked to provide sources for the facts used in their videos, thoroughly sourced information can be found at www.nojudgment.com.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services’ Problem Gambling Program lauds the talent, hard work and dedication shown by so many students across the state. Congratulations to the competition winners and thanks to everyone who made this competition a success.
