For many years, Nevada was the only state that had legalized gambling. Today, there are 48 states with legalized gambling in some form or another. Consider these statistics:

• 80% of adults in the U.S. have gambled at least once this past year
• Roughly 1% of adults in the U.S. are pathological gamblers
• Another 2% to 3% of adults in the U.S. have less significant, yet serious, problems with gambling
• 33% of problem gamblers who received treatment for compulsive gambling also received treatment for chemical dependency or mental health problems
• College students are three times more likely to have gambling problems than adults in general
