What Is Problem Gambling?

Before we tackle problem gambling, let’s cover gambling in general. Gambling is any time you bet money in the hopes of winning more money. And it doesn’t just happen in casinos. Gambling also applies to bets placed between friends, family members and coworkers.

A lot of people don’t consider themselves gamblers because they don’t go to casinos. But if you’ve ever bet money on any of the following, you were indeed gambling.

Games of Chance:

  • Casino Games (Blackjack, Slots, Poker, Video Poker, Bingo)
  • State Lottery (Powerball, Scratch-Off Games)
  • Bar Games (Pulltabs)

Sporting Events:

  • Professional Sports (Football, Baseball, Soccer, Boxing)
  • College Sports (Basketball, Football, Hockey)
  • Racing (Horse, Car)

Games of Skill:

  • Video Games
  • Golf
  • Billiards

The majority of people who gamble can do so responsibly. However, problem gambling isn’t fun for anybody. Problem gambling is a serious behavior disorder that can cause psychological, financial, emotional, marital and legal difficulties for the gambler, plus his or her family, friends, roommates and coworkers.
